Paul Joseph Monks, of Saxony Drive, was charged with second-degree assault in an incident that occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 15, police said.

The assault victim, a Fairfield University alumnus, was visiting his girlfriend’s townhouse and was asleep in an upstairs bedroom, when Monks entered holding a 1.75-liter bottle of vodka, turned on the lights and woke the victim, police said.

When questioned by the victim, the intoxicated Monks did not respond and left the bedroom, according to police. When the victim went to walk Monks out of the home through the front door, Monks spun around and smashed the bottle of vodka on the victim's face, causing serious cuts, police said.

According to police, the 20-year-old Monks was an unregistered guest, visiting friends at Fairfield University that night. Monks was released on $1,000 bond and is due in court on Jan. 16.
