Two Cars Catch Fire On Fairfield Highways Over Weekend

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Two cars caught fire in separate incidents on Fairfield’s highways over the weekend, according to Fairfield Fire Department reports. No injuries were reported in either incident.

The first fire started on Interstate 95 at about 9:30 p.m. Friday. A woman coming from Stamford reported that smoke started coming from her engine compartment while driving near exit 21. She was able to get out of the car before the engine caught fire completely, and was unharmed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Fairfield Fire Asst. Chief Chris Tracy said Monday.

The second incident involved a rollover crash on the Merritt Parkway Sunday evening. A sedan ran off the road and rolled over from the off-ramp at exit 44 at about 6 p.m. Sunday, according to official reports. A fire then sparked in the car’s engine and spread to the passenger compartment before Fairfield firefighters put it out.

All people inside the car were able to get outside before the fire spread, Tracy said. Paramedics checked the driver at the scene for injuries, but no people were hospitalized after the crash. The cause of the crash and the fire are both still under investigation, Tracy said.
