Two Charged With Cocaine Possession In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A driver pulled over for failing to halt at a stop sign Monday admitted to a Fairfield officer that there was cocaine in the vehicle, police said.

During the routine traffic stop, the officer asked whether there was anything illegal in the car, and the driver, Kent Jones, 53, of Hamden, said he had cocaine in his pocket, police said.

The officer field-tested the white substance and it tested positive as cocaine, police said.

The passenger, Gilbert Whitman, 35, of Stratford, told police the only thing he had was a package of cigarettes, which he threw on the floor of the passenger side of the car, police said.

The K-9 unit was requested. During the investigation of the car, a small plastic bag with cocaine inside was found in the cigarette package.

Both men were taken to the Fairfield police station and were found to have numerous other infractions on their records.

Jones and Whitman were each charged with possession of a narcotic and given $1,000 bonds. Both are due at Bridgeport Superior Court on Aug. 12.
