FAIRFIELD, Conn. – During a routine traffic stop early Saturday for someone not wearing a seat belt, one man was charged with possession of cocaine and another man was given an infraction on marijuana possession, Fairfield police said.

When the officer approached the car, he reported a strong smell of burnt marijuana from the inside. When asked where there were any drugs in the car, the passenger said no, police said.

Both the driver and the passenger were asked to leave the car, police said. While getting out, the driver, Jonathon Lecuyer, 27, of Fairfield, dropped a folded piece of paper and attempted to crush it, police said. A clear glass pipe was on the driver seat, police said.

Officers said they found a white rock-like substance in the paper, which field tested for cocaine. The passenger, Justin Szerszen, 27, of Fairfield, admitted to officers that he had marijuana and a pipe, police said. He was issued an infraction ticket on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Lecuyer was given a field sobriety test, which police reported he failed. At police headquarters, he submitted to a breath and urine test, the report said.

Police charged Lecuyer with a misdemeanor summons on a charge of driving under the influence and driving without a seatbelt. He was released on $250 bond with a court date of Dec. 16.

He was also charged with use and possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of narcotics. He was released on a second $250 bond and given a court date of Dec. 16.
