The identities of the victims were being withheld until the next of kin was notified, the fire department said.
Fairfield Fire Marshal Kessler remained on the scene with the State Arson Investigation Division working to determine the fire’s cause and origin.
Original story: One person was killed and another injured in an overnight house fire in Fairfield, police and fire officials said Monday morning.
The Fairfield Fire Department responded to a fully involved house fire at 135 Crane Street at 1 a.m. Monday morning, Assistant Chief Chris Tracey said. Two of the house's occupants were quickly taken to the hospital after a neighbor called to report the fire, he said.
The Fairfield Fire Department sent four engines, two ladders and a car with an ambulance to the scene. The blaze was heavy on the first and second floors at the front and right side of the house when firefighters arrived.
"Within 15 minutes of their arrival, the patients were in the ambulance," Tracey said, adding that they were taken to Bridgeport Hospital. Police Chief Gary MacNamara confirmed that one person had died of their injuries.
“We encountered extremely heavy fire condition on arrival,” said Incident Commander and Assistant Chief George Gomola. “Through a coordinated team effort we were able to knock down the bulk of the fire while initiating an aggressive interior search, with Firefighters Jeff DeNitto, Will Malkin and John Calandriello pushing through extreme heat as they made the second floor stairwell to gain access to the bedroom where the occupants were located.
"They went above and beyond, with their efforts made possible by Lt. Eannotti’s Engine 2 crew on fire attack and Lt. Corbo leading Company 3 on ventilation.”
The Westport Fire Department also came to the scene to provide assistance and mutual aid to the department. United Illuminated was also called to the scene to disconnect power from the street at about 1:40 a.m.
Fire Marshal Kessler and representatives from the State Fire Marshal’s Office remained on the scene to investigate the cause of the blaze.
