FAIRFIELD, Conn. Two suspects were charged in thefts from parked cars after two separate investigations by Fairfield Police.
Robert Currytto, 37, of Bridgeport was identified as a suspect in thefts from cars in the Stratfield section of Fairfield over the last two months. Detectives first began investigating Currytto after he was seen in the area at 1:30 a.m. one morning in September, according to police reports.
Investigators began surveillance on Currytto and they believe that he would walk around the area checking for unlocked cars, and would stash items taken in hiding spots to avoid arrest if stopped by police, investigators say. Officers also talked with a man in Shelton who claimed that Currytto sold him more than 50 stolen items, according to police reports.
Police believe Currytto committed at least eight thefts in Fairfield in early September, police say. He is also a suspect in similar incidents in Bridgeport, Trumbull and other surrounding towns, according to police reports.
Currytto was charged with third-degree larceny and third-degree burglary, both felonies, Wednesday morning. He was arraigned that day and is being held on a $25,000 bond.
Richard Ortiz, 40, of Ansonia was accused of taking a credit card from a car parked at Fairfields Tomlinson Middle School in May. In that case a suspect broke a window on the car and took a wallet from inside, according to police reports.
Credit cards from the wallet were used at a gas station and a Target store in Trumbull, police say. Ortiz was seen on video using the card to buy two television sets, with a total value of $990, according to police reports.
Fairfield police worked with investigators from Stratford, Derby, Milford and Shelton, who named Ortiz as a suspect in similar crimes in those towns, police say. He is awaiting trial on theft charges from Stratford and Trumbull, according to state court records.
Ortiz was charged with fourth-degree larceny, credit card theft and illegal use of a credit card, all misdemeanors. He was taken to court Wednesday, and is being held on a $5,000 bond for the Fairfield charges.
