FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A 24-year-old man suspected of breaking into vending machines at a Fairfield hotel was arrested Monday night on drug charges, police said.

The manager at the Best Western Hotel in Fairfield called police after she saw a man breaking into vending machines in the building Monday night, police said.

Officers stopped Thomas Cody, of Naugatuck, in the hotel parking lot as he attempted to leave in a Chevy Equinox with New York plates, police said. The manager identified him as the person she believed was responsible for two vending machine break-ins last Wednesday and Thursday, police said.

After officers asked Cody to get out of the car, they conducted a pat down search and found a large amount of coins, which he said he collected, police said. Officers found $12.50 in quarters and other change in his pockets, police said.

As they looked into the car, officers saw a glass smoking pipe with a metal mesh commonly used to smoke crack cocaine, police said.

A further search of the car turned up three wrapped bunches of 10 white wax paper folds with a brown powder that field-tested positive as heroin; a syringe; a packet with white rock that tested positive for cocaine; pliers; and several other tools commonly used in break-ins, police said.

Officers determined the tools had been used to break the coin lock on the vending machines, and a wire hanger was used to access the coins, police said.

Cody was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with intent to sell, possession of narcotics, third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, third-degree criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny.

He was held on $20,000 and given a court date of March 3 after being processed at Fairfield Police Headquarters.
