FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A woman whose wallet was stolen at Stop & Shop Monday told officers later that day that the thief had already tried to rack up nearly $6,000 in credit card charges, police said.

The woman said she left her wallet in her shopping cart and noticed it was missing when she went to pay for her groceries around 2 p.m., police said.

The $20 wallet contained credit and debit cards, $150 cash and a spare key to her car, she told police.

In the time it took to begin canceling her credit cards, the thief had already made a $2,800 purchase at Best Buy and attempted to spend $2,950 at an Apple store, police said.

The theft could be connected to others at Stop & Shop and Whole Foods locations in Fairfield and Westport over the past few months, police said.
