Katherine Stonick, 27, who was arrested Oct. 21, and her attorney told the Hartford Courant that she has evidence that proves she did not bilk a date out of a $300 gift card at a Westport restaurant in August. In fact, she told the Courant that she was not the woman on the date and that she has never been to Finalmente Trattoria in Westport.

Her arrest garnered widespread attention on the Internet. The victim said he was on a first date with a woman who called herself “Sophie” at the Post Road East restaurant on Aug. 17, Westport police said. When the waitperson took the victim’s credit card to pay the bill, “Sophie” excused herself to use the restroom, police said.

The woman asked the manager to add a $300 gift card to the charge, took the gift card and then used it on Aug. 18 and 19, according to the police report.

The victim reported the incident to police Aug. 23 and provided the license plate number of his date’s car, police said. Officers arranged a photo lineup and the victim identified “Sophie” as Katherine Stonick, 27, of West Elm Street, New Haven, police said.

Stonick turned herself in on a warrant — which is signed by a judge — and was charged with sixth-degree larceny and illegal use of a credit card, police said.

She was released after posting $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 26, police said.

Westport Police Lt. David Farrell told the Westport News that the department is "confident with our investigation" and said Stonick did not cooperate with the investigation.

But Stonick told the Courant that she was at home at the time of the date and not in Westport on the following two nights when the gift card was used. She also said she has a lie detector test and statements from five witnesses to back her up, the Courant said.
