Westport Town Hall contacted police Thursday morning to report that a resident had contacted officials about an email from the town asking him to update his credit card information, police said.
The man told the first selectman's office that the email said the information was needed to facilitate any online payments being made to the town, police said. He questioned the validity of the email, and upon investigation found that it was not sent from the town, police said.
Police believe that the email was an attempt to gain credit card information from residents in a format called phishing.
Currently, police are attempting to locate the origins of the email and are investigating the case.
The police also reminds residents that the town does not, and has not, requested financial information in unsolicited emails. Residents are asked to contact any agency or business making the requests prior to giving the information in order to determine if the request is real.
