Would-Be Thief Tears Lockbox From $88K Mercedes-Benz At Dealership

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A would-be thief's plan to take a 2013 Mercedes GL 450 for a spin didn’t quite work out as planned, according to Fairfield police.

Police reported that a lockbox containing a key to a Mercedes-Benz was stolen from a Fairfield dealership Friday.

Fairfield Police responded to a report of a theft from a motor vehicle Friday at Mercedes-Benz of Fairfield at 165 Commerce Drive. Officers found that a lockbox, which contained a key to the GL 450, had been torn off the car, police said.

The vehicle is valued at $88,000, according to police.

The lockbox was valued at $300, and police reported that it would cost $1,500 to rekey the car, police said.

The incident is under investigation, police said.
