FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) blasted President Donald Trump’s remarks defending racist protesters at a white nationalist rally over the weekend in Charlottesville, Va.

Blumenthal specifically called out Trump for blaming the violence in Charlottesville on both sides of the conflict, saying, "one side was to blame."

One person died over the weekend as the largest gathering of white nationalists in a decade descended on Charlottesville, along with hundreds of counter-protesters.

Blumenthal issued a series of Tweets on the issue:

  • Trump's repugnant comments mark a complete abdication of any semblance of moral leadership.
  • DOJ must investigate & enforce laws stopping domestic terrorist attacks, civil rights conspiracy & hate crimes like we saw in #Charlottesville.
  • President's stunning remarks send a message of approval — not mere condoning — to violent hate groups.
  • No more dog whistle, now a megaphone used by the President to message approval for violent hate groups.
  • Donald Trump is not the real America. All Americans should condemn these disgusting, indefensible comments. Let us unite.

Blumenthal also appeared on CNN’s “Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer” to respond to Trump’s remarks.

During the CNN interview, Blumenthal called on all Americans to take a stand and “speak out against this atrocious abdication of leadership.”

An emotional Blumenthal spoke about his father, who came to the U.S. in 1935 at the age of 17 to escape Nazi Germany.

"This great country ... gave him a chance to succeed, to raise a family and to believe in America," Blumenthal said of his father. "Nobody loves this country more than my dad."

He said his father would be sad and ashamed to "watch a president who condones, even approves complicity, of those torch-carrying, epithet-shouting, hate-filled people.

"And i think we are at a critical junction in our nation when we need to express moral outrage at all who stand silent," Blumenthal said. "We all have a responsibility and there has to be a denial of that moral equivalent that both sides are to blame. In tact, one side is to blame."

He called the events in Virginia a domestic terror attack.
