Speaking to the property tax increases, which have angered some owners of residential properties, Ganim said most homeowners did not see an increase in property taxes this year.
“A majority of residential homeowners in the City of Bridgeport got a tax cut this year or their property taxes stayed the same,” Ganim said. “Some went up and the majority of those that went up … not by large amount. And then there was a small percent of residential homeowners —especially in the Black Rock area — that went up more than anyone else’s."
But Ganim said, “Their values are the highest, and they’ve had the best increase or the lowest decrease in value since 2008.” Ganim said home values can change “dramatically” over eight years.
On his 2015 mayoral campaign, Ganim said it wasn’t easy to decide whether to run.
“It was a tough analysis,” he said. “But at the end of the day there were things going on in the city that challenged me intellectually to say, ‘I should do this’ and ‘I can do a better job.’”
