Fairfield Appoints Committee To Investigate Election Day Mishaps

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Residents have yet to forget the errors and difficulties surrounding Election Night in Fairfield that left them standing around Democratic and Republican headquarters late into the night awaiting results.

More than two weeks after the Nov. 4 elections, and in some cases the early Wednesday morning that followed, First Selectman Michael Tetreau and Fairfield’s Board of Selectmen have decided to charge a committee to get to the bottom of this issue.

“We have an obligation to the voters, candidates and future candidates to figure out what happened,” Tetreau told the public at a meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 19. One of the main goals of the committee, he said, is to separate fact from fiction and to stop what he called “management by rumor.”

Tetreau said he received calls from the chairmen of both parties after Election Night who expressed concerned over the problems that occurred involving absentee ballots, a malfunctioning machine and miscommunication between registrars.

Republican Bryan Cafferelli and Ronald Pine as well as Democrat James Quinn were appointed to the Election Process Review Committee after being nominated by the chairs of both parties.

Selectman Kevin Kiley said he understood the importance of the process but “would like a formal charge written” before moving forward or voting on anything involving the committee.

Selectman Cristin McCarthy Vahey agreed and ultimately the Board of Selectmen decided to move the agenda topic to the next meeting.

The Board of Selectmen will meet again on Dec. 3 at 4:30 p.m. in the first-floor conference room of Independence Hall.
