Fairfield Offers Grants To Help Elevate Homes Above Flood Plain

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- After the devastating damage caused by Superstorm Sandy in Fairfield, the town will begin offering grants to assist homeowners with the cost of elevating their homes above the flood plain.

The program, announced in a statement from First Selectman Mike Tetreau, is only for primary residences.

“I encourage residents living in our beach area to contact Mr. [Jim] Wendt to learn more about this program and to seek assistance to help you alleviate some of the financial burden associated with Storm Sandy," Tetreau said in the statement. "This program allows homeowners to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures to help reduce the risk of future flood damage and loss of property.”

A successful grant will reimburse up to 75 percent of the cost of elevation, according to the release. The grant program has limited funding and awards will be made on a competitive basis.

Homes must be elevated to at least one foot above the base flood elevation. Homeowners must provide three written price quotes and a current elevation certificate.

"Due to the timing of the grant program, cost estimates should be based on work to be done one year out," the statement said. "The grant will not cover actual costs that exceed estimates."

Interested property owners must submit all required materials before Friday, Oct. 18.
