The session, hosted by the Republicans from Fairfield, was held in conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day at the Fairfield Senior Center. Those who attended received information about how to identify and stop abuse and fraud involving elderly victims.

Speakers included a fraud incidences and prevention expert from AARP, Laura Snow of the Jewish Senior Services Center of Elder Awareness Prevention and Chief Gary MacNamara of the Fairfield Police Department.

Hwang and Kupchick discussed legislation passed in the last two years to deal with elder abuse and fraud. Some of these were adding text messaging to the state’s Do Not Call List, electric rate protection and safeguards on price gouging during storms.

“This forum is the exact kind of collaborative teamwork we need to educate Fairfield seniors on Senior Fraud and Abuse Prevention,” MacNamara said. “There are many scams and frauds attempted by criminals aimed at our most vulnerable population, our seniors, and we need to make sure they are protected.”

Teresa Giegengack, Fairfield Senior Center director, said, “This was a vital topic for the seniors in Fairfield to hear and learn about from experts in the field. I want to thank both Brenda and Tony for hosting this informational forum.”
