FAIRFIELD, Conn. – State Reps. Brenda Kupchick and Tony Hwang, both Republicans, visited a new Fairfield business recently, offering their opinions on the business climate of Connecticut and their support to Red Mango.

General Manager Sim Lamba led them on a tour of the Black Rock Turnpike eatery and gave them a taste test of its treats. Red Mango sells all-natural frozen yogurt and smoothies.

“As a small business owner, I understand the hard work it takes to start and run your own business,” Kupchick said. “Government should encourage residents who take on the challenge. I’m a strong supporter of locally owned businesses.”

Hwang added, “Supporting our local small businesses is critical to the continued vibrancy of our community. We need to recognize the hard work and efforts of local entrepreneurs and help toward their long-term success.”

Red Mango has earned the honor of being the only frozen yogurt place to receive National Yogurt Association’s Live and Active Cultures seal, after having met the requirements for healthy frozen yogurt. Its menu has also been expanded, and now includes all-natural, made-to-order fruit and yogurt parfaits, fresh fruit smoothies and the first all-natural probiotic iced teas and lattes in the world.

Kupchick and Hwang were both instrumental in passing a 2011 bipartisan jobs package. It included the Small Business Express Program that gives companies with less than 50 employees access to low-interest loans, so that they may expand their facilities or hire more employees.

This year, again with the help of votes from Kupchick and Hwang, the program was expanded. More than 1,000 small businesses, including a few in Fairfield, have been among the recipients of these loans, the lawmakers said.
