RTM Member Tymniak Announces GOP Candidacy For Fairfield First Selectman

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- It may only be mid-February, but Representative Town Meeting member Chris Tymniak is already looking forward to November, as the longtime Fairfield resident announced his candidacy for first selectman.

“I thought about doing this three years ago,” said Tymniak, a Republican who is on his second stint with the RTM. “But my wife was pregnant with our second son, and it wasn’t the right time to be running a campaign.”

Born and raised in Fairfield, Tymniak is the son of two former Connecticut state representatives and grew up in the Greenfield Hill neighborhood. After attending a slew of public and private local schools - Sherman, Fairfield Country Day, Dwight, Tomlinson and Fairfield Prep - Tymniak headed north to play football for Springfield College.

But Tymniak didn’t leave his politics behind and restarted the Young Republicans Club at the Massachusetts college, where it had laid dormant for a number of years.

Years later, he has set down roots of his own and now lives on Old Mill Road with his wife, Nicole, and sons Sam, 6, and James, 3. But the goal of being a political leader remains.

“I’m running to give back to our great community, the community I grew up in,” Tymniak said. “We have a great quality of life here in Fairfield, and I want to preserve it for our children.”

Based on his career experience, Tymniak believes he has what it takes to do just that.

For the past two years, he has served as the business administrator for the city of Ansonia, where he said he has been able to lower taxes each year, adding he has “walked the walk.”

“I have the passion and the drive for this, and I believe I can make Fairfield a better place,” Tymniak said. “I want to convert the skills I have from Ansonia into running my own town.”

Although Tymniak hasn’t served on a Board of Finance or as a selectman, he said, “It won’t change the fact that what I do on a daily basis is run a town.”

As of Tuesday evening, Tymniak is the only Republican who has announced his candidacy. He has yet to be endorsed, and “accepts” that the process is open to other candidates but hopes there are no others, so he can get a jump start on his campaign.

“The election is 230-something days away,” Tymniak said. “Fairfield is a complex town and you need [a campaign plan] in place by mid-March.”

Fairfield First Selectman Michael Tetreau, a Democrat, has not yet announced his plans for fall.
