“While no one wants any tax increase, especially in this economy where many of our residents continue to struggle, the reality is that our town has essential needs that must be funded. This budget recommendation does fund our short- and our long-term needs,” Tetreau said.
The biggest costs in the budget are education, pension, capital replacement projects, paving and retiree medical expenses, Tetreau said.
Plans to improve school security are being worked on by the town, the school district and the Fairfield police and fire chiefs, he said. But the plan's costs have not been completely put together and won't be included in the budget Tetreau is presenting to the town.
Tetreau will be presenting his full budget to the Board of Finance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Education Center on Kings Highway East. More specific plans will be unveiled at that time, he said.
This is the first in a series of budget meetings that will end with a vote by the Representative Town Meeting in early May.
