After learning about the digestive system in class, fifth grader Teisha Hyman ate an apple. The apple was red with some green spots, and she wondered what happened to it as it went into her body.
Stemming from a fourth grade project, Teisha, 10, armed with knowledge about how the human body works, wrote a book called "Uh Oh, A Human!"
"She's excited but nervous," said Angela Hyman, Teisha's mother. "I think it's wonderful. It's great because she really does have a lot of skills. I'm very proud of her. I'm glad she put it out there so that her peers can pursue their dreams too and know that it's not too young to start."
Teisha said that she was proud of herself for completing the book and putting her imagination and writing skills to the test. Last month, she was celebrated at R.J. Bailey's Wellness Assembly for the publication of "Uh Oh, A Human."
"I would like to encourage every student to carry out their ideas," she said. "You can do important things."
Teisha spent a day writing the story, researching the mission of each piece of the digestive system from the esophagus to the stomach and intestines.
"The book is important for kids because they can learn about nutrition in their body," said Angela. "It's a good tool to start a discussion with."
Teisha and her family have lived in Greenburgh for six years, moving from Juniper Hill to North Road two years ago. In past years, Angela even attended Woodlands High School.
The book was published and illustrated by Arthur House. It can be purchased from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The Greenburgh Public Library also has a copy on file.
