Jury Convicts Woman of Murder in '08 Hit and Run

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A Ponoma, N.Y. woman accused of striking and killing a White Plains woman and hitting another pedestrian in October 2008 faces up to 25 years to life in prison after a jury convicted her of murder and three other felonies.

The jury convicted Sheldene Campbell, 40, of second-degree murder, a felony, second-degree attempted murder, a felony, first-degree attempted assault, a felony charge of leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene without reporting charge, and third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

Westchester District Attorney Janet DiFiore said Campbell must be held responsible for her actions on Oct. 19, 2008 when her car struck and killed a woman, and then rammed into a second woman in White Plains.

“In a span of a few short moments, this defendant tore through a quiet suburban neighborhood, killed one person, created havoc, and left behind permanent physical reminders and emotional scars, which have changed the lives of two families forever,” DiFiore said in a statement.  “Although Ms. Campbell has acknowledged mental issues, this jury found her criminally responsible for her actions that day and now she must be held accountable.”

DiFiore’s office said Roseanne Schiavone was out walking her dog near 205 Havilands Dr. when she heard the revving of a car engine behind her that October morning.  Campbell's car was traveling on the wrong side of the road when it hit Schiavone as she tried to get out of the car's path, according to the district attorney’s office.  Schiavone was injured and her dog suffered a broken hind leg.

Campbell’s car continued traveling up Havilands Drive and struck a second pedestrian, Marie Bucci, near the intersection of Baylor Circle, according to a press release from the district attorney's office. EMS rushed Bucci to White Plains Hospital where she was declared dead.

Police reportedly found Campbell walking near the corner of Bryant and S. Lexington avenues and discovered her damaged car shortly afterwards.

Campbell's sentencing has been scheduled for Feb. 7, 2012.
