Sheriff Michael Saudino said he will applaud the 53 members of the class for their “community involvement and commitment to public safety.”

Many of them will also speak about their experiences in the course, the 11th annual for the sheriff’s office.

The academy is designed “to educate participants on the functions of the Sheriff’s Office and the role the agency plays in Bergen County,” Saudino said.

It uses a classroom-style format to demonstrate the types of equipment and tactics used by law enforcement in a wide range of areas — including motor vehicle stops, the Medical Examiner’s Office, gang violence awareness, homicide investigations, K-9 patrol and detection, criminal investigations and ballistics.

A highlight, as always, was the sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification — the “CSI” of the county — which collects and processes evidence from crime scenes.
