The fire began on the first floor of 441 Gorge Road around 2 p.m.

Firefighters got to it quickly, keeping the blaze contained, but fire crawled up the walls, sending smoke to the third floor of the three-story building.

A dozen or so cats and dogs were rescued.

The hospitalized man’s condition couldn’t be determined late this afternoon.
