The Beacon School held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor David Martin and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes in attendance at 111 W. North St., in the historic Hubbard Mansion. It was formerly the home of the Mother of God Academy and is located near the Old Greenwich border.

The school is oriented for gifted students who may have lost their way in a larger school setting, said founder Victoria Newman.

A former public school teacher who has a daughter in the Greenwich Public School system and one who attends King Low Heywood Thomas school, she said the school offers certain students what they are seeking.

"We work with kids who are passionate about learning, some of them were bored in traditional classrooms and wanted smaller classrooms," she said. "They want to study things they are passionate about."

The new building gives the school its first ever campus, including a large gym, she said.

The school will have sports but not big sports teams, she said.

"We are never going to be a school that is going to have a football team," she said. The school does have many students who play sports outside of school and she said they will always accommodate those students who may have to miss school time due to the demands of their sports.

Newman is excited about its new home in a historic residential neighborhood just a short distance from Stamford Hospital.

"We love the neighborhood. We love the energy and we are happy that the kids have their own campus.''

The Greenwich Education Group began with Newman in 2005 who offered comprehensive tutoring, test prep and educational consulting. It grew into homeschooling and in 2009 it received accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The school moved to 44 Commerce Road in Stamford before settling on its new site in the Hubbard's Hill section of Stamford close to Stamford Hospital.

The school's name came from its original location at Beacon Point in Cos Cob and the school believed it provided a light for its students.
