About 40 parents, community members and alumni of Bassick High School showed up bright and early Thursday to welcome current students back to school, encouraging them to make the most of their academic lives.
State Sens. Ed Gomes and Marilyn Moore were among those cheering and high-five-ing the students at 7 a.m.
“There was so much energy in the room, so much enthusiasm,” said Moore, chair of the General Assembly’s Committee on Children. “We want to let our students know they have support in the community, we believe in them and we wish them all a fantastic and productive school year.”
Gomes and Bridgeport’s Men of Substance organized the effort over the last few years.
“I think it has an impact on children who look at us, haven’t seen us before, and who realize someone is concerned with them other than their parents,” he said.
Once Bassick was in session, Gomes and the greeters headed to Dunbar School to welcome kids in grades K through 8.
The group plans to visit one school a month. Next up is Great Oaks Charter School at 7:15 a.m., Sept. 6.
