Drama Club Brings Fairfield Students Together

How can you bring teenagers from different grades with different hobbies together? Playing sports is one way. Service organizations are another.  At Fairfield’s Notre Dame Catholic High School, it is clear that the plethora of clubs available accomplish gathering all of these kids together.

And while many of the clubs have large attendance, one of the largest is the Drama Club. Students from all four classes and all different interests come together for the common goal of putting on a wonderful production each spring.

This year, Notre Dame's Drama Club will be putting on the fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast.” Actress and teacher Maria Verderber is the musical’s director, and she has put together a new spin on the old story. The lead roles of Belle and the Beast belong to senior Caitlin Bonenfant and sophomore Dan Murphy, who have both been staples in the drama club.

Many students at school were excited at the prospect of taking part in this play -- auditions drew a full house. Rehearsals started soon afterwards, and all of the cast members have been working hard to memorize their lines and capture their character’s personality.

The diverse cast is very glad to be taking part in the spring musical. The Drama Club's diversity is notable: Students in the club are from all grades at school, yet they all work together harmoniously. They all take part in their favorite clubs, sports and hobbies, but a strong common bond is found among all of them through acting, singing and having fun.

While the spring musical takes hard work, students happily devote themselves to the opportunity. The cast and crew gladly rolled up their sleeves, running different fundraisers and other events while staying on top of their schoolwork and taking part in their other hobbies. Being involved in the play definitely takes balancing, but everyone who takes part agrees that it is worth it.

The play will take place at Sacred Heart University's Edgerton Center on May 6 and 7. Tickets are currently on sale at Notre Dame, located at 220 Jefferson St. For more information call (203) 372-6521 or email marzik@notredame.org.
