Fairfield Fourth-Graders Set To Compete At National Scrabble Championships

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Nine fourth-graders from Fairfield’s North Stratfield Elementary School will be competing in the National School Scrabble Championships.

The competition will be Saturday and Sunday in Providence, R.I.

The following students plan to participate on North Stratfield Elementary’s team, according to a press release.

  • Isabella Baptista,
  • Nikolai Darken,
  • Madison Greenspan,
  • Dina Lacugna,
  • Amelia Melody,
  • Catherine Melody,
  • Freddy Osborne,
  • Olivia Seward, and
  • Riley Siegel.

“Most of these kids never picked up a Scrabble board before coming to an advertised after-school Scrabble Club that began last fall,” Howard Greenspan, the team’s coach and a PTA member, said in a press release. “They really have become exceptional players over the past year.”

Over 100 students from across the United States, representing fourth through eighth grades, will be competing in this year’s National School Scrabble Championships.

Social and recreational activities are also planned for the students and those parents who attend.
