Fairfield Students MADD About Tacos Make Charitable Donation

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield University students may have a reputation for the debauchery that occurs at the beach, but one group of student activists is starting to build a new reputation, one donation at a time.

On Thursday, Nov. 13, three Fairfield University students representing the Beach Residents Advocacy Group (BRAG) made a contribution of $1,100 to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving's Connecticut chapter.

“This is a first time partnership with Fairfield University,” Executive Director of MADD CT Janice Heggie Margolis told the press in the lobby of Fairfield Police Headquarters on Reef Road.

She and her organization will look to further the new-found relationship in August, when the university trains resident assistants for the dorms for the upcoming academic year.

BRAG President Storm Miller said he was approached by Jennifer Owen of MADD, through Lt. Thomas Mrozek of the Fairfield Police Department, about getting students involved in one of the four major walks the organization does in the state throughout the year.

Unfortunately, both parties said, the walk landed on Alumni Weekend at the university. So Miller - with the help of BRAG members Kevin Gavin and Ellie Goepel - organized a fundraiser of their own.

“We found a creative way to raise some money for the cause,” Miller said. “We hired the Taco Loco truck, ordered about 500 tacos and sold them outside of the [Seagrape Cafe].”

Jokingly, Miller admitted the bomb threat at the Seagrape on the night of the fundraiser may have helped them sell their supply of tacos and meet their fundraising goal. With this success, BRAG will be looking for more opportunities to raise money or provide services to the community at large, he said.

Their next fundraiser will be in the coming weeks as they plan and schedule a toy drive for Bridgeport children for the Christmas season.
