Fairfield Students Win Awards for Energy Ideas

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Three Fairfield students were honored as eco-friendly thinkers recently. Izzy Roth, Michael McMahon and Karina McMahon placed in the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund’s “eesmarts” student essay contest.

“The eesmarts statewide initiative for students K-12 plays an important part in building greater awareness of the benefits of energy efficiency and in stimulating the thinking of young people, who, after all, will be the key to developing the energy solutions of the future,” Daniel Etsy, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection commissioner, said at the ceremony.

The contest asked students at Connecticut’s schools to work on a project about conserving energy. Each grade level was assigned a different medium.

For example, Izzy, an eighth-grader at Roger Ludlowe Middle School, had to write a script for a brief scene of a family cutting down on energy consumption. Michael, a sixth-grader at Tomlinson, crafted a persuasive essay to convince his family to adopt a “Family Energy Constitution.” His sister, Karina, a Burr School second-grader, created a poster promoting energy-saving plans.

Izzy and Michael placed second in their age groups, winning an Amazon Kindle e-reader. Karina ranked fourth among second-graders, and took home an Amazon gift card. They received their prize at a ceremony at the State Capitol with Gov. Dannel Malloy and other state officials earlier this month.
