The anonymous donor said the money could be used for any purpose at the discretion of the university's president.

The open bequest made last month is in accordance with the donor’s wishes, Fairfield University said.

Fairfield University has said it will allocate the funds for the modernization and expansion of the Leslie C. Quick Jr. Recreation Complex, a facility that serves more than 95 percent of the student body, as well as many faculty and staff.

“Gifts of this magnitude are extraordinary and transformational to an institution and we are extraordinarily grateful to the individual who made this commitment,” University President the Rev. Jeffrey P. von Arx said in a statement.

“By directing these funds to improving our Rec-Plex facility, we are ensuring that the total Fairfield experience – Academic and spiritual, as well as fitness and recreation – remains integral to our mission and one that will be enhanced by this generous gift.”

The Rec-Plex facility, built in 1979, is located in the center of campus and houses the swimming pool, Birkenstock field house, and fitness and weight areas that that support general recreation, intramural, and club sports as well as the varsity swimming and diving teams.
