Students, faculty and friends of Notre Dame High School contributed 201 frozen turkeys to the Kiwanis Educating Youth (Key) Club’s Thanksgiving food drive for Bridgeport residents in need.
On the Friday before Thanksgiving, Key Club members dropped off food at the Daughters of Charity rescue mission in Bridgeport. The mission is run by Sister Theresa Tremblay.
In addition to the turkeys, the group arrived with canned vegetables, cereal, juices and more traditional Thanksgiving foods.
The donations far surpassed Sister Tremblay's expectations, and members of the mission were thankful for the school’s contribution. This year's donations were more essential than in past years because of the many people devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
Other groups donated large amounts of food to the Daughters of Charity. The mission's main building — where it runs a pre-school program for local children — had many rooms filled with donations. The generosity of Fairfield County residents was evident in the number of donated food items.
The Key Club at Notre Dame will run two more major donation drives this school year: one at Christmas and one at Easter — both collaborations with the Daughters of Charity.
