High winds and rain tore a rubber roof membrane off a section of the high school early Thursday morning. A section including 15 classrooms in the school were damaged by water, Superintendent David Title said in a letter to parents Thursday.
Title explained that staff did not see the damage until after buses had started their routes, so school opened with displaced classrooms Thursday. The school canceled classes after 10:15 a.m. Thursday, and will stay closed except for administrators Friday.
“The school district, in conjunction with its contractors and insurance carrier, is developing a mitigation and restoration plan for the school,” Title wrote. “The school district's central office team, along with the Fairfield Ludlowe High School administration, is developing a plan for the relocation of classes in the affected areas when the school is cleared to reopen.”
The unaffected areas of Fairfield Ludlowe are cleared for entry, Title added. The school’s “Rebound for Newtown” fundraiser and other extracurricular activities are still on as scheduled.
