Those in university's sports communication and media graduate program got to assist production crews from "The Dan Patrick Show" as they filmed promotional segments and an opener for an upcoming Super Bowl episode.

The shows' executive producer Paul Pabst is a faculty member in the School of Communication and Media Art. He said the high-end green screen and studio at the university's Frank and Marisa Martire Business & Communications Center would be ideal for the show.

“When these state-of-the-art studios were built, we knew that various professional media would see the sports communication and media program and its facilities as a place that they could use to produce content. It’s also a bonus for our undergrad and grad students to be able to assist and learn,” Pabst said.

The students spent two days during the winter break helping the crew on the show and its production company DirecTV.

"Their knowledge of the Martire center and its studio was a great help, said Pabst, who teaches sports media at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

“Students really helped move things along,” he said, adding that such collaborations ultimately enable students to make connections with professionals who might hire them for other projects.

Graduate assistant Kara Levine worked as a production assistant for the two days. She said she was excited when she learned Patrick would be filming at SHU and was prepared to “put her best foot forward.”

She got to observe crews set up shots, film Patrick and review their work, as well as ran errands for the crew.

“I love sports and the production behind it,” said Levine, who wants to pursue a career in sports media production.

The premise behind the show opener will remain a secret until it airs, but Pabst said it may or may not involve Patrick wearing a space suit.

“It was very helpful that Sacred Heart opened its doors to us as we shot our show openings for Super Bowl week,” Patrick said. “Loved the great new building and communications studios.”

The Dan Patrick Show can be viewed on the Audience Network, NBC Sports Network, which is based in Stamford, and at www.danpatrick.com.
