The five seventh-graders were among those selected to read their poems at the sixth annual contest celebration on Jan. 31 at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University.

Alyssa Negron won second place for her poem "The Waltz." Among the honorable mentions were Justin Figueroa for his poem "Shelter You," Monei Jackson for "Poetic Peace" and Malachi Rivera for "Oceans." Xiomara Hernandez’s poem "Quiet" was selected as a Judges’ Favorite.

"The Poetry for Peace Contest is designed to encourage discussion of how the language of poetry relates to the creation of peace," representatives said. "The contest gives young poets the chance to express their own visions of peace through creative writing."

More than 1,000 students submitted poems in the contest.
