Breaking News: Sticky, Stormy: Shift In Weather Pattern Starts Sunday

Snow Days Could Ruin Fairfield's Spring Break

The snow brought an added bonus to the Adintori family Friday. Nicole, a Fairfield Ludlowe student, and her sister Katelin, who attends Holland Hill Elementary, both were off from school. And because dad Michael's construction site was snowed over as well, he spent the day with them, sledding on Fairfield University's campus.

But while Michael's day off was a nice treat, the girls' days off might come at a price — part of their April vacation. The Fairfield Public School district's policy is to allot four snow days each year. That means the three days already canceled will be tacked on at the end of the year. But just two more closures, and the district will begin making up time during spring break as well.

"The way this winter's going, they're going to use it up quick," Michael said.

Superintendent David Title said he's aware of the limit but said his chief concern is safety. Still, he said his usual policy is to be conservative with cancellations. Though last Wednesday's two-footer was a "no-brainer," he normally waits until the snow hits the ground rather than rely on forecasts.

This way, Title says, he can use early dismissals and delayed openings rather than cancellations. According to state regulations, as long as some classes are held, the day counts toward the district's requirement of 180 days per year. "Theoretically, you could do a late arrival and an early dismissal on the same day, and it would count," Title says.

The Adintoris hope the policy can keep spring vacation intact. Michael admits it doesn't matter for some families, who book vacations well in advance and give their kids the time off anyway. And though Michael says he's not worried, he hopes it doesn't come to that.

"I felt sorry for the kids a couple times. They had to bring their schoolwork on vacation," Michael says. "That's not much of a vacation, but what are you going to do?"
