Thurgood Marshall was the first African-American associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, serving from 1967 until his retirement in 1991.
He also served as the lead attorney in the landmark Supreme Court Case, Brown v. Board of Education, which declared unconstitutional any state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white student.
John W. Marshall specializes in giving motivational speeches detailing his father’s role in the nation’s civil rights movement and his place in American history. Additionally, he has been the featured speaker for numerous law enforcement and rescue-related events.
“We learned about Thurgood Marshall last year and how important he was in the Brown vs. Board of Education,” said fifth-grader Susi Curolla.“It’s a big honor to have Mr. Marshall come to our school.”
“It was an honor to have Mr. John Marshall visit our school,” said Principal Anna Nelmes-Stoughton. “It was inspirational to see him greeting students and sharing with them pictures of his own father, the Honorable Judge Thurgood Marshall. Throughout his brief comments he repeatedly emphasized to the students the value of hard work, dedication, and continuing their education.”
Marshall made his visit on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
The Thurgood Marshall Middle School is part of the Six to Six Interdistrict Magnet School,which is on Pearl Harbor Street in Bridgeport. The school includes fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from Bridgeport, Fairfield, Monroe, Shelton, Trumbull and other neighboring towns.
