Two Days Added To Fairfield School Year Per Snow Policy

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Students who applauded the recent snow days may be regretting that in June: The recent snowfall has already delayed the end of the school year by two days for Fairfield schools, according to Superintendent David Title.

Unlike some districts that add extra days for snow days in their calendars before the year begins, Fairfield adds days on to the end of the school year for every snow day used, Title said.

“We have had two snow days this year. Our last day of school, as of [Feb. 3] is Monday, June 15,” Title said. “The next four snow days would extend the last day of school by one day each.”

Fairfield School District’s policy, according to Title, is to add “one day onto the end of the year for each of the first six snow days.”

In a worst-case scenario where six snow days are used, Fairfield schools won’t be dismissed until June 19, “not unusual for us,” Title said.

Fairfield schools had not taken a snow day through Dec. 31 but have used two since the start of the New Year.

If the winter continues on this path, and Fairfield is forced to use beyond six snow days, extra snow days will be taken out of the district’s spring break, which runs from April 13 to April 17.

With snow in the forecast for later this week and next week as well, Title said the end date on the 2014-15 school year is as unpredictable as the weather.

“Every year is different,” he said Tuesday.
