Danbury Drops Heartbreaker At Cal Ripken World Series

DANBURY, Conn. -- Danbury’s 12-year-old All-Stars fell to 1-2 in the Cal Ripken World Series on Monday after a 4-3 loss to the team from Meridian, Idaho.

The Pacific Northwest champions evened their record at 1-1 in the tournament, which is being played in Aberdeen, Md.

Danbury had a golden opportunity to tie or go ahead in the sixth inning but could not push home any runs.

Leadoff hitter Patrick Iannetta singled and stole second. Daniel Villalona bunted, and stole second as Iannetta took third. Andrew Philbin walked to load the bases with none out. Meridian turned a double play to stall the rally, and got the final out to preserve the win.

Danbury built a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and second, but Meridian rallied for four runs in the second to take the lead for good. Iannetta scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to trim the lead for the Idaho team to one.

Danbury also left two runners in scoring position in the fifth. Danbury had nine hits compared to four for Meridian.

Danbury plays its final game of pool play Wednesday against Maryland. Danbury needs a win to even its record to have any shot at advancing to the U.S. semifinals.

Four of the 10 teams in the U.S. Division advance to the semifinals. Four teams also advance to the semifinals in the International division.
