DANBURY, Conn. -- Former Danbury High School star Casey Smith, a red-shirt sophomore at Fairfield University, won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honor for the fifth time.
She is one shy of the program mark set by Katelyn Linney in 2009.
"Casey had a big second half for us in our Manhattan game," head coach Joe Frager said. "I'm really happy for Casey. She's worked really hard and has had an important role in our success."
Smith, a transfer from St. Joseph's, averaged 12 points and two assists per game while shooting 55 percent from the floor in Fairfield's 2-0 week.
In the game against Manhattan, Smith led a second-half surge by scoring the first 10 points for the Stags. Smith's streak started a 19-0 run by Fairfield that gave it the lead for good
Smith also had a steal, a block and six rebounds in the contest while shooting 64 percent from the field. In the win against Canisius, Smith scored six of the first 10 points in the opening stanza and had a crucial basket with 2:24 to go which would put the Stags up seven.
Smith, who has scored the sixth-most points in her rookie season in Fairfield history, will be in action with the Stags in two games in the next week. Fairfield hosts Siena at Webster Bank Arena for Senior Day at noon Saturday and follows that game with its final home contest of the year against Marist at 7 p.m. Monday.
