The state championship series began this past weekend in Rocky Hill with Fairfield opening against Seymour Sunday afternoon. It turned out to be a great start as the Fairfield girls turned in a solid team performance, winning 9-0. Kylee Holderied pitched the entire game for Fairfield, striking out five while giving up only one hit. The entire team was solid on defense, registering 14 put-outs with only one error.

Fairfield then continued its quest of the state championship in a game against Waterford. Last year, the Fairfield 10’s lost their state championship bid to Waterford in an exciting championship game that went into extra innings.

This year, the Fairfield team got on top early and never looked back, winning, 10-0. Kylee Holderied pitched a perfect game for Fairfield with eight strikeouts and was once again backed up by a solid team defensive performance that didn’t allow Waterford a single base runner.

In the two games Sarah Szuchman has recorded six put-outs from her third base position, and Olivia DeSabella had five from her second base position. Serena Ta scored two  runs, Molly Meehan had two hits and three RBIs, and Kylee Holderied went four-for-five with five runs scored.

Team Manager Dennis Nolan said he has been most impressed by the overall team performance this year. Although there are some individual highlights, everyone on the team has contributed with everything from stolen bases and sacrifice bunts to solid catching and all-around defense, he said.

The girls on the Fairfield team are: Bella Bookas, Sammy Juthnas, Olivia DeSabella, Molly Meehan, Margaret Nolan, Kate Petroni, Caroline Belinsky, Serena Ta, Jasmine Castro, Sarah Szuchman, Bridget Keary, Ira Boci, Alenah Savongdy, and Kylee Holderied. The team manager is Dennis Nolan and coaches are Mark Szuchman and Chris Meehan.

Fairfield awaits the winner of the loser’s bracket in the state championship final to be played in Rocky Hill on Saturday.
