FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield's Little League Girls Softball 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars won the Section 1 championship Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Seymour in Wallingford.
Fairfield will play Waterford South in a best-of-three series for the state title beginning Saturday in Trumbull.
Fairfield shut out Seymour for the second straight night behind the pitching of Haley Bivens, who threw a one-hitter. She struck out nine. Fairfield, which lost its opening game of the tournament, rallied for five straight wins to claim the title.
Bivens received tremendous defensive support. Right fielder Emma Romeo made two fine plays to help keep Seymour off the scoreboard.
Bella Bookas, pinch running for Caitlyn Romero, scored Fairfield’s first run in the fourth. Sarah Szuchman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the run.
Kylee Holderied led off the fifth inning with a triple. She scored on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Juthnas. Caroline Belinsky’s RBI single drove home Molly Meehan with Fairfield’s other run.
Fairfield plays Waterford South on Saturday at 11 a.m. and on Sunday at noon. The if-necessary game is Monday at 6 p.m. The series will be played at Unity Park.
