Fairfield American Captures District 2 Little League Championship

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield American Little League secured the District 2 title Saturday with a 6-3 win over Trumbull National, sending the All-Stars to the next stage in its quest to reach the Little League World Series.

Fairfield American advances to the Section 1 tournament, where it will play on Wednesday at Unity Park in Trumbull. Fairfield will play District 4 champion Milford National at 5:45 p.m.

Fairfield American went 7-0 in the District Tournament. Its run was highlighted by Richie Kerstetter’s no-hitter in a 7-0 win over Trumbull American, which put Fairfield into the championship game. Kerstetter fanned 15 and Ben Gaffney hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in that win.

In the final game, Matt Longo pitched 5 ⅔ strong innings. Fairfield American led 5-0 on the strength of a five-run second inning.

Fairfield American’s roster is Andrew Fortunato, Ben Gaffney, Jack Gremse, Martin Merturi, Matt Longo, Matt Sawyer, Matt Vivona, Michael Iannazzo, Michael Innaimo, Richie Kerstetter, Ryan Grady, Ryan Mcintosh and Sean McAdams.

Manager Brian Grady is assisted by Scott Sawyer and John Merturi.

Fairfield American also plays Thursday in the Section 1 tournament against Stamford North. The top two teams in Section 1 will play for the championship on Friday, with the winner advancing to the four-team state championship round beginning July 27. The state champion advances to the New England Regional.
