Fairfield American Outslugs New Hampshire In Little League Tournament

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield American Little League baseball team kept alive its hopes to reach the Little League World Series Thursday with a 17-11 victory over Bedford, N.H. in Bristol.

The Americans face another elimination game on Friday when they play Massachusetts at 1 p.m. in Bristol. The winner meets undefeated Rhode Island for the New England championship on Saturday.

Fairfield’s victory on Thursday was a wild affair. Fairfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings, but Rhode Island tied it with seven runs in the fourth. Fairfield scored four more in the fifth, and New Hampshire answered with three in the bottom of the inning. A six-run sixth inning finally put the game away for the Americans.

Matthew Sawyer had three hits and six RBIs for Fairfield, including a grand slam. Richie Kerstetter also homered and had three RBIs. Fairfield had 21 hits, including four each from Ben Gaffney and Michael Iannazzo.

Jack Gremse got the victory as Fairfield used four pitchers. Andrew Fortunato got the final three outs.

New Hampshire beat Fairfield, 7-1, in the first game of the tournament on Sunday. Fairfield bounced back with an 8-2 win on Tuesday over Maine.
