Fairfield American Rolls To State Little League Championship

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield American won its fifth Little League state championship in seven years on Saturday with a 6-3 victory over Coginchaug.

Fairfield moves on to the New England Regional Tournament Sunday in Bristol. The regional champion advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., later this month.

After falling behind, 2-0, in the top of the first inning the American rallied for four in the bottom of the inning and were never headed. Matt Sawyer's three-run home run put Fairfield ahead to stay. Martin Merturi laced a two-run single and Matt Iannazzo pitched four solid innings to get the win.

The Americans rolled to the title in District 2 by going 7-0. In the Section 1 tournament, Fairfield beat a determined Stamford North squad for the championship. Fairfield went 3-0 in Section 1 play, and 3-0 in state play.

The Americans play their regional opener at 7:30 p.m. Sunday against Bedford, N.H.

Fairfield American’s roster is Andrew Fortunato, Ben Gaffney, Jack Gremse, Martin Merturi, Matt Longo, Matt Sawyer, Matt Vivona, Michael Iannazzo, Michael Innaimo, Richie Kerstetter, Ryan Grady, Ryan Mcintosh and Sean McAdams.
