Fairfield Giants Pee Wees Win League Football Title

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Giants Pee Wee team defeated Newington, 20-0, to win the Southern Connecticut Pop Warner Football League championship.

The victory sends Fairfield to the state championship Sunday against New Fairfield. Kickoff will be at noon at Pomperaug HIgh School in Southbury.

Quarterback Nick Morris hit tight end Grady Bartlet on a 35-yard strike for the first score of the game, giving the Giants an early 6-0 lead. In the second quarter, Gavin Toth took a weak-side sweep 30 yards, zig-zagging his way through Newington defenders, diving for the pylon and in for the score. Morris would hit the PAT, making the score 14-0 at the half.

Fairfield mounted an impressive 65-yard, seven-minute drive to open the third quarter. Morris ran for the final Fairfield touchdown.

The Giants defense was the story of the day, shutting down Newington's high-power offense all four quarters.  

Middle linebacker Charlie Wilcox led the defense with nine tackles and numerous assists. Outside linebackers John Reynolds, and Finn Donelan contained the Newington running backs and Kyle Stevenson and Mike Innaimo shut down the passing game.

Freddy Capossela, Peter Strang, Dylan Fragameni and Tommy O'Connell pressured the backfield, squashing the run game and limiting the time to pass. Other game standouts where, Owen Miller, Anthony Bambus,Grady Golier, Luke Oligino, Trevor Knisely, Jed Keresey, Luke Martucci, Max Spies, Robert Delia, and Joe Sangiulo.

Declan O'Hara, Luke Oligino, John Reynolds, Joe Sangiulo, Aaron Sepot, Max Spies, Kyle Stevenson, Peter Strang, Gavin Toth and Charlie Wilcox.

Coaches are Mark Innaimo, Ronnie Ciccia, Lee Battista, Nick Morris, Jeff O'Connell, Todd, Oligino, Keith Reynolds, Will Keresey and Doug  Stevenson.

The Junior Midget team lost to Milford, 16-0, in the league title game. The Junior Midgets finish the season 9-1.

The Junior Midget Giants also raised $7,000 for ALS research with donations they solicited for each victory.
