FAIRFIELD, Conn. The pressure of the Section 1 softball tournament doesn't bother Fairfield's Anna Rasmussen. Whether it's softball, ice hockey or soccer, the rising seventh-grader at Roger Ludlowe Middle School always seems to be playing in important games.
Rasmussen is playing second base for the Fairfield softball team, which plays for the Section 1 championship Wednesday. In April, Rasmussen played forward for the Mid-Fairfield girls hockey team that finished fifth in the country. In June, she celebrated a Connecticut Cup soccer championship with the Fairfield United. Rasmussen played goal for the soccer team, which beat Milford, 1-0, in the championship game.
"It's challenging,'' Rasmussen said. "Sometimes it gets annoying because the seasons run into one another. A lot of times the practices overlap. I try to go to the practice that is most important at that particular time."
But Rasmussen is unflappable when situations seem dire. When Fairfield trailed Seymour, 5-1, during Monday's pool play game in the Section 1 tournament, she was not rattled. "It helps me stay focused,'' she said. "I've been through a lot of this before."
Anna also plays golf at Carl Dickman Par-3 Golf Course on South Pine Creek Road. "I enjoy it, because there's nothing to win, and nothing to lose,'' Anna said. "I just enjoy playing without getting too competitive."
Anna played on the Fairfield 10-year-old All-Stars that won the New England title and played in the East Region championship game. Now she's a key member of a team that is a win away from playing for the state championship. "I think we have the ability to do it."
