In his final high school cross country race, Alvarado finished in 15:47. The race featured the top 40 high school runners in the country, and the top 15 earned All-American status. Alvarado finished 11  seconds behind the 15th place finisher.

While Darien’s Alex Ostberg, who finished 11th, ran with the leaders from the outset, Alvarado hung back and tried to make a late move. He managed to get close to the top 15 before getting passed in the late stages of the race.

“I was satisfied,’’ Alvarado said. “I was trying to get All-American status. I left everything on the course. I improved over last year. I was exhausted coming up the hill the last time. I was so tired. It has been a long season.”

Alvarado won the Class LL and State Open championship, finished third in New England and was second in the Foot Locker regional championships. He was one of the few runners to run at Foot Locker for two straight years.

“It would’ve been hard to imagine I’d be able to achieve any of this when I first started running,’’ said Alvarado, who has committed to run at Georgetown University. “It’s unbelievable. I’ve had amazing coaches at Prep. It just goes to show that hard work and dedication pays off. What I’ve accomplished this season makes me hungry to get to the indoor and outdoor track seasons and accomplish even more.”
