Alvarado won the 2-mile in 9:00.29, setting a meet record. Ostberg finished second in 9:02.24, which also topped the previous meet record. Alvarado’s time is the best in the nation this winter at the distance, and Ostberg’s time is No. 2 in the country.

“I knew the state record for two miles was 9:08 and 9:02 for the meet record,’’ Alvarado said on MileSplit.com. “Obviously I wanted to break nine, too. I thought I got it at the line but apparently I didn’t. I am still happy with the time, a U.S. No. 1 right now. It definitely gives me a ton of confidence. It really makes me happy to be able to accomplish something like that today.”

Ostberg set the early pace, and the leaders went through the first mile in 4:33. Alvarado, a senior headed for Georgetown University, pulled ahead with 350 meters to go.

Alvarado and Ostberg  could meet again in New Balance Indoor National Championships, scheduled for March 14 to 16 in New York City.
