FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield Americans Will Lucas thrilled a national television audience and fans in Williamsport, Pa., by pitching a no-hitter Monday to lead the team to a 4-0 win over New Castle, Ind., in the Little League World Series.
Fairfield American will play Petaluma, Calif., at 8 p.m., Tuesday in another losers bracket game.
Lucas struck out 13 and walked just one to lead Fairfield to victory. He struck out the side in the first inning and continued to cruise. He allowed just three base runners. One reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout, and another made it on a fielders choice. He threw 76 pitches, 57 for strikes, and faced just two batters over the minimum.
I just tried to throw strikes and let them put the ball in play, Lucas said in an interview with ESPN after the game.
Lucas, who was trending for a few moments on Twitter, helped his own cause with a two-run single in the fifth to break open the game. Matt Kubel hit a solo home run in the second for Fairfield. Henry Prestegaards RBI single drove in Kevin Oricoli with the second run, also in the second inning.
Biagio Paoletta had two hits for Fairfield, which gets another shot against California. Fairfield lost its first game of the tournament, 6-4, last Thursday to California. On Monday, California staved off elimination with a 5-4, eight-inning win over New Jersey.
