Fairfield Softball Team Clinches District Crown

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Maddie Russell’s two-run single in the fifth inning drove in the tying and go-ahead runs Tuesday night as Fairfield nipped Black Rock, 4-3, to win the District 2 Little League softball championship in Trumbull.

Fairfield, the defending New England champion, will meet Darien in Shelton Thursday night in the first pool play game of the Section 1 tournament. Fairfield is the defending state and New England champion.

Fairfield, which went undefeated in pool play, found itself in trouble after Black Rock built a 3-1 lead after four innings. In the fifth, one Fairfield run scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Black Rock intentionally walked No. 3 hitter Anna Rasmussen to pitch to Russell, whose hard ground single up the middle drove home the tying and go-ahead runs.

Brittany Romero struck out two batters in the sixth, and center fielder Zoe Holderied caught a fly ball for the final out.

After Thursday’s game against Darien, Fairfield plays Friday, Sunday and Monday. The top two teams from pool play meet for the Section 1 title on July 11. The Section 1 winner meets the Section 2 champion to determine the Connecticut champion on July 14-16 at Unity Park in Trumbull.
